Our Verdict

I took the Katadyn BeFree Filter AC 1L on a fifty-mile stretch of the Pennine Way and was genuinely impressed by how much it’s evolved from its well-known predecessor. The more rugged black bottle instils more confidence chucking it around on rougher days, even if it adds a few extra grams. If shaving weight matters more, the lighter blue version is still available.

The addition of activated carbon made a real difference—on the Kinder plateau, where the water had a strong peaty tang, it mellowed that out nicely. It’s a small touch, but over time, I increasingly appreciated it.

The flow rate is quick, and the EZ-Clean membrane does what it says—just a swish in clean water and you’re sorted. The setup’s refreshingly low-fuss: the flask folds away neatly, and the flip-cap hasn’t leaked on me yet.

The carbon insert does need swapping every couple of months, but the filter works fine without it. That said, I’ll keep packing it—the improvement in taste is worth it.
