Our Verdict

I took the Katadyn BeFree Filter AC 0.5L on a fifty-mile stretch of the Pennine Way and was genuinely impressed by how much it’s evolved from its well-known predecessor. The addition of activated carbon made a noticeable difference—on the Kinder plateau, where the water had a strong peaty tang, it mellowed things out beautifully. It’s a minor upgrade that pays off over time.

The flow rate is quick, and the EZ-Clean membrane lives up to its name—just a quick swish in clean water, and it’s as good as new. The setup is refreshingly low-fuss: the soft flask folds neatly, and the flip-cap feels solid and leak-proof.

There’s also a black version available, which isn’t just a cosmetic choice—the bottle’s noticeably more rugged, though it adds a few extra grams. A fair trade if you want something tougher for rougher use.

The carbon insert does need swapping every couple of months, but it’s optional. The filter works perfectly without it, though the difference in taste is enough that I tend to pack it when I can.
