The Exped Ultra 1R LW Sleeping Mat offers ultralight warmth for summer backpacking with a minimalist weight and compact size. It uses Exped’s AirMat technology with air channels to provide cushioned support and an R-value of 1.3.

Our Verdict

The Exped Ultra 1R LW Sleeping Mat delivers its minimalist weight and compact packed size for ultralight warmth on summer backpacking trips. Utilising Exped’s AirMat technology with head-to-toe air channels, this 7cm thick mat provides cushioned support and an R-value of 1.3—ideal for warm-weather (summer/late spring)camping. The 20D recycled ripstop polyester fabric is durable yet packs down tiny at 23 x 9.5cm.

Despite weighing under 400g, the Ultra 1R doesn’t compromise comfort. The flat valve design and the Schnozzel Pumpbag allow quick inflation without moisture intake, and the ComfortCradle sidewalls prevent sleepers from rolling off. The Ultra’s recycled build and carbon-neutral certification provide peace of mind for environmentally-minded adventurers. When shaving every ounce counts for fast-and-light summer adventures, this ultralight sleeping mat hits the sweet spot.

The Schnozzel Pump sack is still the best pump sack I have used. It is simple to use and saves your lungs after hiking hard.

ASTM R-Value:

From 2020, there is a new industry standard for measuring the R-value (level of insulation) of sleeping mats – ASTM F3340-18. This new standard is the sleeping mat equivalent to the EN rating for sleeping bags.

You can now directly compare the R-value of mats rated using the ASTM F3340-18 with confidence that is a fair and accurate comparison between mats. In simple terms, the higher the R-value, the warmer the mat.

In general terms, an R-value below 2.0 is for summer use, 2.0 to 4.0 is for cooler 3 season use and 4.0+ is for winter temperatures.
