Our Verdict

The Sweetwater UL 28L from Big Agnes is a capable daypack that excels at load distribution thanks to its wide, vest-style shoulder straps. These connect directly to the lumbar and help spread weight across the chest and shoulders with minimal bounce—ideal for fast-paced hiking or long trail days. The generously sized shoulder strap pockets keep water, snacks, or your phone accessible on the move. I’ve come to expect them on any pack in this category. At 920g for the medium/large, it’s light without feeling insubstantial. The shaped back panel is well-padded and breathable, and the internal framesheet offers welcome structure for heavier loads. I’d prefer hip belt pockets, but their absence does allow for a bit more airflow. My only real quibble is the drawcord on the lid closure, which could be tidier.
