Our Verdict

At 1241g, the Campmeister Deluxe isn’t built for fast-and-light missions, but the weight is entirely reasonable for its warmth, width, and comfort. It’s an excellent choice for winter use, but also works well year-round if you’re prioritising comfort. If you’re looking to cut weight while still keeping some plushness, the Big Agnes Rapide SL Insulated might be a better fit.

The Campmeister’s stretch fabric top has a soft, almost velvety feel, and the 11cm outer thickness means you’re well off the ground even on uneven pitches. The R-value of 7 is impressive; the heat-reflective layer paired with PrimaLoft insulation does a good job of insulating you from the ground.

Inflation and micro-adjustment via the dual valve system is intuitive, and the mat comes with an improved Big Agnes feather-weight pump sack.

ASTM R-Value:

From 2020, there is a new industry standard for measuring the R-value (level of insulation) of sleeping mats – ASTM F3340-18. This new standard is the sleeping mat equivalent to the EN rating for sleeping bags.

You can now directly compare the R-value of mats rated using the ASTM F3340-18 with confidence that is a fair and accurate comparison between mats. In simple terms, the higher the R-value, the warmer the mat.

In general terms, an R-value below 2.0 is for summer use, 2.0 to 4.0 is for cooler 3 season use and 4.0+ is for winter temperatures.
